2015 UMN Family Medicine Residency Grads: By the Numbers

In 2015, 53 medical residents graduated from University of Minnesota family medicine residencies. An update on where those grads are practicing or pursuing additional training follows.

Practice/Training Locations

Of our 53 residency grads from 2015, 52 are currently practicing or pursuing additional training in the U.S. Locations follow.

• 74% stayed in Minnesota
• 13% went to other Midwestern states 
• 6% went to Western states
• 4% went to Eastern states
• 1% went to Southern states

Of the 50 states, residency grads from 2015 are practicing or training in 12 of them. States include Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Washington, and Wisconsin.

One grad is currently undecided and has not selected a location for practice or additional training. 

Types of Practice

Our 2015 residency grads are practicing in a number of settings and caring for a variety of communities and patient populations.

• 70% are working in private practice (4% at multispecialty clinics)
• 13% are working as hospitalists
• 4% are working in emergency/urgent care settings
• 1% are working in academic environments (specifically at our own UMN Medical Center residency)
• 1% are undecided

Additional Training

Eleven percent of 2015 residency grads were accepted into fellowship training programs in sports medicine and geriatrics.

How Are the “Top Doctors” Selected?
A survey is sent, at random, to 2,500 physicians and 2,500 registered nurses in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Respondents indicate which doctors they would go to in pre-selected specialties. Physicians who receive the top 15 percent of the vote in each specialty are featured in the magazine.

More than 10,000 licensed doctors in the Twin Cities metro area were asked to nominate up to 3 doctors (excluding themselves) whom they would consider "the best" in each specialty category. Physicians who received the highest number of votes were named in the "Best Doctors" list.

Story Behind the Results

Approximately 5,000 licensed metro area physicians and registered nurses were asked to nominate one or more doctors (excluding themselves) whom they would choose if they or a loved one were seeking medical care. 

Candidates who made the final list were grouped into 42 specialities and evaluated on a variety of factors, like peer recognition, professional achievement, and disciplinary history. The highest scoring doctors were then invited to serve on a blue-ribbon panel and asked to evaluate candidates in their practice area. 

Physicians who acquired the highest total points from the survey, research, and blue-ribbon panel review were named to the Mpls.St.Paul Magazine 2014 "Top Doctors" list. This year's "Top Doctors" will also join a group of doctors from more than 20 cities around the country who have been designated "Super Doctors." More about  "Super Doctors" at superdoctors.com.
