Minnesota Medicine recently released its January 2014 issue, featuring an article on the growth of DOs (or doctors of osteopathic medicine) in the physician workforce. According to the article, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine reports that more than 20% of medical students attend a college of osteopathic medicine. Many of those medical students go on to study at dually accredited (by AOA and ACGME) or allopathic (a.k.a. MD) residency programs.

The University of Minnesota family medicine residencies provide integrated training for osteopathic and allopathic residents. Depending on the program, features may include AOA and ACGME dual accreditation, osteopathic training opportunities, and DO residents and/or faculty.

Dual Accreditation

The University of Minnesota Mankato Family Medicine Residency is dually accredited by the AOA (American Osteopathic Association) and ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education).

Faculty

We have DO faculty at four of our residency programs:

Residents

We have DO residents at all eight of our residency programs.

Training Opportunities

  • The department sponsors a full-day osteopathic medicine workshop, open to all residents and community physicians.
E-mail fmch@umn.edu for more information about the workshop and registration.
  • Our North Memorial residency offers a longitudinal educational track in osteopathic medicine.

MDs and DOs: What's the Difference?

"While DOs and MDs have much in common, osteopathic medicine is a parallel branch of American medicine with a distinct philosophy and approach to patient care."
-Boyd Buster, DO, AOA trustee and spokeperson
"DOs embrace a whole-body philosophy of care."
-Scott Hanson, DO, Mankato resident
